BMW 2002 Door Lock Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you remove and refit the door lock and handle assembly on BMW 2002?
A: Open the door to its fullest extent and remove the armrest retaining screws, accessing the upper screw by prising off the cover clip and sliding it downwards. Take out the door lock interior handle by removing one screw after prising out the plastic insert. Prise off the cover plate from the window regulator handle, remove the exposed screw, and pull off the handle. Use a piece of bent wire inserted through the small hole at the rear of the quarterlight ventilator control knob to lever off the cover plate, then remove the control knob screw and the knob. Insert fingers between the interior trim panel and the door to release the securing clips located all around the door, then lift the panel away, noting the two coil springs-one on the shaft of the window regulator and the other on the quarterlight ventilator control shaft. Peel off the waterproof sheet from the inside of the door, remove the lock remote control assembly securing screws, and unhook the control rod from the lock end. Release the screw on the window glass guide channel, then remove the lock securing screws from the edge of the door and take the lock out of the door cavity in a downward direction. If needed, the door exterior handle can be removed by unscrewing the setscrews and crosshead screw from within the door cavity. Refitting is a reversal of removal, ensuring the remote control assembly allows free movement of the interior handle between 0.112 and 0.20 in. Make sure the two coil springs have their larger diameters away from the handles. With the lock refitted, close the door gently and check the setting of the striker plate on the door pillar, ensuring the door closes smoothly as it engages with the dovetail and peg of the striker plate without rattling when fully closed. If adjustment is necessary, release the striker plate screws and move the plate within the limits of its elongated holes in the door pillar, taking care not to remove the securing screws to avoid losing the plate into the back of the pillar, which would require removing the rear seat and body side trim panel to retrieve it.
