BMW 330i Rack and Pinion Boot Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Rack and Pinion Boot on a BMW 330i?
A: Raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the fasteners and remove the engine under-shield. Remove the tie-rod end clamp bolt. Discard the bolt; a new one must be installed. Release the clamp securing the rubber boot to the tie-rod. Note the installed position of the boot on the tie-rod. Mark the position of the tie-rod end on the threaded portion of the tie-rod, or count the number of turns and unscrew the tie-rod end from the tie-rod. Release the clamp securing the boot to the rack and pinion, and pull the boot over the tie-rod. Thoroughly clean the tie-rod and the rack and pinion housing, using fine abrasive paper to polish off any corrosion, burrs or sharp edges which might damage the new boot's sealing lips on installation. Scrape off all the grease from the old boot, and apply it to the tie-rod inner balljoint. This assumes that grease has not been lost or contaminated as a result of damage to the old boot. Use fresh grease if in doubt - consult a dealer or parts store. Apply a little grease to the tie-rod so the boot will slide, then carefully slide the new boot (with the retaining clips in place) over the tie-rod, and position it on the rack and pinion housing. Position the outer edge of the boot on the tie-rod. Secure the boot with the retaining clamp. Thread the tie-rod into the tie-rod end, aligning the marks made previously, or counting the number of turns, so the tie-rod and end are in their original positions. Insert the new tie-rod end clamp bolt and tighten it to the specified torque. Ensure the outer end of the boot is still in the correct position, then secure it with the retaining clip. Install the engine under-shield and lower the vehicle to the ground. It is recommended that the front wheel alignment be checked at the earliest opportunity. On models with active steering, have the steering angle sensor calibration checked using BMW diagnostic equipment. Entrust this task to a dealer or other qualified shop.
