BMW 330i Vacuum Pump

BMW 330i Vacuum Pump is a crucial part of the diesel operating engines as it offers vacuum to the HVAC system's actuators and power brake boosters. Usual driven by the belt or camshaft, the vacuum pump is responsible for maintaining emission rates, also control the timing advance and power brake assist. Whereas the earlier designs tend to employ piston or diaphragm type pumps, today's car may include a vane pump fed with engine oil. Signs that the vacuum pump is failing can be a hard brake pedal; problematic climate control; lack of acceleration power; these need the right diagnosis and replacement for the engine to perform as required and for the longest time.

BMW 330i Vacuum Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and replace the vacuum pump in BMW 330i?
A: The 3.0L models utilize a vacuum pump on the left side of the cylinder block, driven by a chain from the crankshaft sprocket, due to the Valvetronic system. To replace it, remove the drivebelt, tensioner, vacuum pump cover, and intake manifold. Rotate the crankshaft pulley bolt until the vacuum pump sprocket holes align with mounting bolts. Secure the sprocket, loosen the retaining bolt and pump bolts. Push the chain tensioner right and lock it. Unscrew the bolts, replace the pump, and use a new gasket. Reverse the process to install. For 2.0L models, the vacuum pump is at the rear of the valve cover, driven by the exhaust camshaft. Remove engine covers, trailing link, and sound insulation cover. Disconnect the vacuum line and battery cable. Remove the turbocharger vacuum line screw and disconnect the line to the control unit. Unscrew and pull off the pump. Replace the O-ring if needed, lubricate, and re-install by rotating and pushing into the camshaft gear. Secure with screws and reverse the steps for the rest.
