BMW M3 Brake Light Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: What is the location and adjustment process for the brake light switch on BMW M3?
A: The brake light switch is installed at the brake pedal and can be of variety of types. While a threaded body switch has to be adjusted by hand to its position, a non-threaded body switch only has the position set during installation. Where there are two switches, one of the thread type and the other non-thread, the unit without the thread controls brake lights, while the threaded switch is a test switch. For the removal and installation of a threaded body switch, the lower dashboard trim has to be pulled off to obtain access to the switch to disconnect the corresponding wire connectors, to unscrew the locknuts and to unscrew the switch from the holder. Disassembly is done in an opposite sequence of assembly application and it is necessary to provide a space of 15/64 inch (6mm) between the face of the pedal to the edge of the switch threads before joining the wires and replacing the trim. For a non-threaded body switch, you simply snap off the wiring harness, then to pull out the switch you step on the brake pedal and at the same pull the plunger as well as the sleeve. If the brake pedal is pressed again, the sleeve and plunger move to the limit position, the switch is fixed in the holder, brake pedal is released slowly to adjust the position of switch before connecting the harness plug. In order to adjust a threaded body switch, access to such switch is obtained in the same manner, the locknuts are then turned to provide the correct distance between the pedal and the threads of the switch. Same as for removing a non-threaded body switch, disconnection is done and then the threaded body is taken off then the adjustment is made once it has been reattached.
