BMW M3 Wheel Hub

The Wheel Hub of BMW M3 vehicles is an important element that fixes the wheel to the vehicle and contains some of the vital parts for instance, wheel bearings, sensors, brake rotor, and brake caliper. The hub is designed with maximized material-resistant capacities, and fastened with bolts and studs for the protection and control of safety and steering. Many wheel hubs are available in the market and they come in different styles, which has different bolt patterns and widths of the axle extension; therefore, it is advisable to ask for the mechanic about the wheel hubs that are ideal for the car. The Wheel Hub Assembly (WHA) used in a BMW M3 car has splined teeth to control and transfer power and uses roller bearings for the smooth rotation of wheels for a better performance of the entire car and safety of passengers. About 90 million vehicles are reported to use SKF Wheel hub bearings proving the need for WHAs in current auto engineering therefore underlining the significance of these bearings in ensuring reliable vehicles operation.

BMW M3 Wheel Hub Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the rear hub and wheel bearing?
A: The rear hub is press-fit into the rear wheel bearing, which in turn is press-fit into the trailing arm. When replacing the rear hub, the rear wheel bearing must also be replaced since removing the hub destroys the bearing. If only the wheel bearing needs replacement, the hub can be reused unless damaged or bent. Specialized tools are essential for removal and installation since the bearing and hub are press-fit. Some tools allow hub and bearing removal and replacement without taking out the trailing arm; when using these, always follow the tool manufacturer's instructions. If using a hydraulic press, the trailing arm must be removed, and on E36 models, this necessitates an alignment check due to changes in toe alignment. The rear wheel bearings, being press-fit, cannot be serviced without damage. If they are noisy or loose, they must be replaced. Disconnect the negative battery cable, raise the vehicle, remove the wheel center cap, loosen the rear axle nut, take off the wheel assembly, and remove the halfshaft assembly. Then, remove the brake caliper and bracket assembly, ensuring no tension on the brake hose. If possible, use a slide hammer tool with a stub axle puller adapter to remove the stub axle from the trailing arm, followed by the large snapring. Next, remove the rear parking brake shoes, springs, and adjusters and the rear trailing arm. Use a hydraulic press to push out the stub axle and the bearing. If the inner bearing race remains on the stub axle, use a puller or chisel to remove it. Clean the stub axle, removing any burrs. For installation, consider freezing the bearing after placing it in a plastic bag and lightly lubricating it to ease the process. Check the trailing arm for damage, clean the area where the bearing goes, ensuring no sharp edges. Using a press, install the bearing into the trailing arm, followed by the snapring. Install any necessary dust shields, support the inner bearing race, and press the stub axle into the race. Reattach the trailing arm, ensuring alignment marks on E36 models. The remaining assembly is the reverse of removal, using a new axle nut and ensuring all fasteners are tightened. Finally, check and adjust the rear wheel alignment if needed.
  • Q: How to replace the Wheel Hub and bearing in a BMW M3's drive flange?
A: Raise the car and support it securely. Remove the output half shaft. Remount the control arm with nuts just finger light. Remove the upper and lower attaching bolts and remove the brake caliper. Suspend the brake caliper nearby with wire. Remove the Allen bolt and remove the brake disc. Bolt special Tool No.31 2 090 or equivalent to the knuckle with its 3 bolts. Mount 33 1 307 hooked around the tie rod arm and press the drive flange off. If it is scored, pull the bearing's inner race out of the drive flange with 33 1307 and 00 7 500 or equivalent. Compress the snapring with snapring pliers and remove it. Remove 31 2 090 or the equivalent and replace 33 1307 or its equivalent with a tool such as 312 070. Install and use the combination to press out the bearing. Screw out the spindle of 312 090 and install 33 4 032 or equivalent so it is flush with the surface of 31 2 090. Use 33 4 034 and 33 4 038 to pull in the new bearing. Then, remove 31 2 090. Install the snapring again, with snapring pliers, making sure the open end faces downward. Pull the drive flange into place with 33 4 032 or equivalent, 33 4 038 or equivalent, 33 4 045 or equivalent, and 33 4 048 or equivalent. Install the brake disc, caliper, and the wheel in reverse order.
  • Q: How to remove and install front Wheel Hub and wheel bearings on BMW M3?
A: This procedure is for 2 wheel drive vehicles. The wheel bearings are only removed if they are worn. They cannot be removed without destroying them. They are not periodically disassembled, repacked, and adjusted. To begin, loosen the lug bolts slightly and then raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove the front wheel(s) and the front brake caliper, caliper bracket, and brake rotor. Make sure to support the caliper and avoid putting tension on the brake hoses. Use a suitable chisel to carefully remove the metal protective cap from the hub by wedging the chisel between the cap's outer lip and the hub. Knock the tab on the collar nut away from the spindle using a chisel. Then, using a 1/2 inch drive 46mm socket and a suitable breaker bar, remove the nut by turning it counterclockwise and discard the nut. Remove the hub by hand or use a bearing puller set if necessary. If the inside bearing inner race remains on the stub axle, unbolt and remove the dust guard. Bend back the inner dust guard and pull the inner race off with a special tool. Reinstall the dust guard. To install, if the dust guard has been removed, install a new one. Install a special tool over the stub axle and screw it in for the entire length of the guide sleeve's threads. Press the bearing on. Once the hub/bearing assembly is installed, tighten the wheel hub collar nut to 213 ft. lbs. and lock the collar nut by bending over the tab into the slot in the spindle. Finally, reassemble the remaining components in reverse order of removal.
