A: There is a separate ignition coil above each spark plug replacement. Maintain a high level of cleanliness when servicing ignition coils. Fuel/oil residue can cause a breakdown in the electrical resistance qualities of silicone used on production, which can result in ignition coil failure. To replace the ignition coil on an M54 engine, make sure the ignition is switched OFF. Remove the upper engine cover. Lift up on the lock and release the ignition coil electrical connector. Remove fasteners and note the position of the coil ground wire. Remove the ignition coil by pulling straight up and off the spark plug. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to reattach ground cables or wires. Check and clear fault codes from ECM memory. For an N52 engine, make sure the ignition is switched OFF. Remove the upper engine cover. Unlock the ignition coil connector and pull the connector off the coil. Slide the rod-shaped ignition coil straight out of the spark plug hole. Installation is the reverse of removal. Check and clear fault codes from ECM memory.
