BMW X5 Heater Core Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove a heater core on BMW X5?
A: Extractor heater core is a complicated and time-consuming process which means disassembling of different interior parts, including the console. It is necessary to work rather thoroughly and use a plastic pry bar for the trim taking out as to not scratch the interior finish. Start by removing the negative cable of the battery with reference to the warnings given with battery disconnecting. Pull the plenum seal and the bulkhead while in the engine compartment; drain the engine coolant. At the rear bulkhead remove the heater core hose clamps, and disconnect the coolant hoses from the heater core pipe flange, using a hose wand, blow through the lines to free of any remaining coolant, have a basin ready to catch flying coolant. Loose the glove compartment, center console, and dashboard and then move to the left side of the dashboard to get the left footwell duct mounting screws and air duct. Third, unscrew the heater core pipes and take them out of the heater core and then seal the outlets of the fluids with a towel to capture droppings of the coolant. Disconnect and disconnected the right footwell duct and then, at the right side of the climate control housing, deply the rear floor air duct bellows as the opening will be allowing the coolant to drip, cover it. Carry on by taking out the housing side cover clip and screws and pull the cover off. With the housing cover off, unplug the evaporator temperature sensor; if needed, remove the footwell duct stepper motor so that the footwell flap can be slid out of the way to pull out the heater core. If the heater core is to be reused, extra caution is required that the cooling fins are not to be twisted while removing them. On reinstalling make sure not to blunt the cooling fins also the sealing O-rings at the pipe junction need to be replaced for proper fitting. Check the position of the climate control housing right side cover in order to fit the retaining screws correctly, while it is necessary to use new wire ties to connect the cable harnesses. The rest of the installation process is done in a sequence that is reversed of the removal process; new hose clamps are used to re-connect the heater hoses before getting into the engine area and then finally, refilling the cooling system by adding water and bleeding air out of the system.
