BMW Z3 Radiator

The BMW Z3 Radiator is one of the noteworthy parts with significant importance as it regulates the temperature of the engine, and ensures that its gets the necessary heat dissipation out of the box via the surrounding air. Constructed usually of aluminum, the cooler consists of a core with fins and tubes with inlet and outlet tanks on it. The major operation that the radiator discharge is through convection whereby heat from the engine coolant is transported to the air by the fins. Most of the radiators have aluminum core but there are also the ones that are made of copper or brass and these both have their own perks and minuses. After-market air coolers for BMW Z3 vehicles are considered an improvement over stock coolers since they contain design features described as superior performance. These manufactured from light aluminum and have aluminum tanks that are brazed or welded to the core and thus offer efficient heat transfer rates and a cooler engine. Larger and/or more internal tubes and the increase in fin density of the performance radiators cause a higher coolant flow and more exposure of the finned surface area for enhancing heat dissipation. Regardless of the type being a direct fit or a universal type, these radiators are easy to install and provide efficient cooling to BMW Z3 cars.

BMW Z3 Radiator Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install a radiator in BMW Z3?
A: Ethylene glycol coolant is hazardous to animals and small children when ingested, even in minimal amounts. Keep children and pets away. For E30 models with 814 ANO M20 engines, first disconnect the negative battery terminal and let the engine cool. Remove the expansion tank cap, fan cowl, and splash shield if necessary. Drain the cooling system from the radiator plug. Disconnect radiator hoses, vent hose, transmission oil cooling lines, and sensor electrical leads. Remove the upper radiator support and radiator. To install, position the radiator ensuring lower supports are in place and reinstall the upper support. Reconnect electrical leads and transmission lines, tightening to 13-15 ft. lbs. (18-21 Nm). Attach radiator hoses with new clamps and reinstall the cowl. Fill with coolant mixture, reconnect the battery, start the engine, bleed the system, and check for leaks. For M42 engines, cool the engine and open the radiator expansion tank bleeder screw. Remove the splash guard and drain coolant. Disconnect the upper radiator hose, temperature switch, and lower radiator hose. Remove the fan cowl, lower expansion tank hose, and if available, the automatic transmission oil cooling lines. To remove the radiator, unlock its holding clips. For installation, secure the radiator onto its mounts, reconnect electrical leads, transmission lines, and expansion tank hose, setting connections to 13-15 ft. lbs. (18-21 Nm). Attach radiator hoses, install the splash shield, fill with coolant, and bleed the system. For E36 models, let the coolant temperature reach 100°F (38°C) before starting. If necessary, remove the lower engine trim panel, then drain the coolant. Remove the trim cover, radiator fan shroud, and fan. Detach electrical connectors, and disconnect hoses. If equipped with an automatic transmission, drain fluid from the cooler lines and inspect seals. Release the radiator hold-down bracket using a flat-blade tool and lift out the radiator, retaining the lower support mounts for reassembly. With the radiator out, inspect the Water Pump, drive belt, and cooling system hoses. Installation follows the reverse order of removal. For models with automatic transmissions, attach the cooling lines with new seals and tighten to 13-15 ft. lbs. (18-21 Nm). Ensure the drain plug is tight and the radiator is set on the lower rubber mounts. Use a 50/50 mix of approved coolant and distilled water, but never exceed a 60% coolant mix. Set the climate control to full hot, bleed the system, and check for leaks. Once cool, top up the coolant if required.
