BMW Z4 Trailing Arm Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you remove and reinstall Trailing Arm on BMW Z4?
A: To bleed the rear suspension one needs to unscrew the wheel bolts, maneuver the car in a way that both front wheels are blocked, lift the rear part of the car and support it on a suitable stand before you remove the respective wheel. Subsequently, remove the two mounting bolts of the brake caliper mounting bracket and release the caliper assembly from the back disc and suspend it to the rear suspension location coil spring to eliminate any pressure on the hydraulic brake hose. Pull the parking brake cable out of the backing plate, remove the rear wheel ABS sensor and the rear anti-sway bar. Remove the brake line bracket from the trailing arm, then jack up the trailing arm and remove the shock absorber lower fixing bolt. Lose the trim panel of the car on the side of the fuel tank, indicate the positions between the eccentric bolt of the lower control arm and the arm and lower the jack for removing the coil spring. Remove the pivot bolt from the lower control arm and the upper control arm pivot bolt from the trailing arm observing the direction of the bolt. Fix the attachment of the trailing arm front mounting bracket with the vehicle; remove only the bolts that fix the trailing arm mounting bracket and separate the trailing arm; do not undo the trailing arm pivot bushing bolt unless it is necessary. For overhaul, remove the front mounting bracket from the trailing arm, clean the trailing arm and inspect for further wear or damage and replace the bushings if required. Bolt the mounting bracket to the trailing arm, place it with a rod and then tighten a pivot bolt. For removal, set the new trailing arm assembly, replace the mounting bracket retaining bolts which must be aligned with previous marks, fit the upper control arm and then the pivot bolt. Return the coil spring, lift the trailing arm, fit the lower arm pivot bolt along with the eccentric washer and screw it in, without overtightening. Replace the fuel tank panel and brake pipe retaining bracket, put back the rear stabilizer bar, reconnect the parking brake cable and put back the ABS wheel sensor. Place the caliper into the position over the disc and tighten the bolts of the caliper bracket mounting. Fit the drive axal, lower the car, shake it to locate parts and c/tighten the shock absorber lower mounting bolt and upper control arm pivot bolts. Last but not the least, ensure that the lower arm eccentric washer is well aligned before tightening it and last but not the least, tighten the wheel bolts.
