The rear wheel bearing is fitted to the trailing arm after having been pressed into the required position while the wheel hub is fitted to the bearing after being pressed into the required position. The wheel bearing gets affected when the drive hub is withdrawn and is not interchangeable. This makes it necessary to use special press tools and still retain the trailing arm fixed on the vehicle as and when one is replacing a wheel bearing. To embark on the job one must have adequate knowledge on the procedure involved.

Proceed to remove the wheel bearing with BMW special tools 3121131, 334261/333266/333261.

The tab on the collar nut needs to be knocked away from the spindle using a chisel. Then, a 1/2 inch drive 46mm socket and a suitable breaker bar can be used to turn the nut counterclockwise and remove it.

Rear wheel bearings that are noisy or loose must be replaced. To replace them, disconnect the negative battery cable, raise the vehicle, remove the wheel assembly, halfshaft assembly, brake caliper and bracket assembly, and rear parking brake components. The bearing and stub axle are removed using a hydraulic press or specialized tools.

The same torque and recheck process applies as in all-wheel and four-wheel drive vehicles. Additionally, adjustments to the wheel bearing should be made if it is out of specification; if it remains loose, replacement is necessary.

Use snap ring pliers to remove the wheel bearing circlip.

Remove the output half shaft.
