    Q:
How to remove and replace the master cylinder on BMW 330i? Posted by Customer
    A:
Don't allow brake fluid to come into contact with the paint as it will damage the finish. Removal: Working at the rear of the engine compartment, remove the cabin air filter cover mounting bolts and cover. Slide the filter from the housing. Release the catches and remove the left-and right-hand plastic covers from behind the strut tower on each side of the engine compartment. Unzip the wiring where applicable. Depress the clips and pull the cable guide forwards from the cabin air filter lower housing. Release the catch and remove the bolt on each side, then slide the cabin air filter lower housing forwards and maneuver it out. Remove the Brake Master Cylinder reservoir cap, and siphon the brake fluid from the reservoir. Disconnect the fluid hose(s) from the side of the reservoir, and plug the hoses to keep contaminants out of the brake system and to prevent losing any more brake fluid than is necessary. Unclip and pull out the Brake Master Cylinder reservoir locking pin. Carefully ease the fluid reservoir out from the top of the Brake Master Cylinder. Remove the reservoir seals, and plug the cylinder ports to prevent the entry of dirt or moisture. Release the mounting fasteners and remove the driver's side trim panel above the pedals. Disconnect any electrical connectors as the panel is withdrawn. Pry off the clip and remove the pin securing the pushrod to the brake pedal. The brake booster must be loosened so the Brake Master Cylinder can be removed and installed. Remove the brake booster retaining nuts; new ones must be installed during installation. Clean the area around the brake line fittings on the lines from the Brake Master Cylinder to the ABS modulator/hydraulic unit, and place rags beneath the line fittings to catch any spilled fluid. Make a note of the correct installed positions of the fittings, then unscrew the mounting nuts and carefully withdraw the lines. The brake lines must not be bent. Plug or tape over the line ends and Brake Master Cylinder openings to keep contaminants out of the brake system and to prevent losing any more brake fluid than is necessary. Wash off any spilled fluid immediately with cold water. Loosen and remove the nuts and washers securing the Brake Master Cylinder to the brake booster, then withdraw the unit from the engine compartment. Remove the O-ring from the rear of the Brake Master Cylinder. Discard the retaining nuts; new ones should be used on installation. If the Brake Master Cylinder is faulty, it must be replaced. Repair kits are not available from dealers, so the cylinder must be treated as a sealed unit.

    Q:
How should brake fluid be disposed of properly and How to remove and reinstall the brake fluid reservoir and master cylinder on BMW 335i? Posted by Customer
    A:
Brake fluid is toxic for the environment and it can cause corrosion therefore, it needs to be disposed of. The following process should be used to start the procedure; First, you have to take off the cabin microfilter housings and the left lower dashboard trim. Remove the brake fluid level sensor connector that is fixed on the brake fluid reservoir situated at the left rear of the engine compartment; unscrew the reservoir cap. When performing brake service use a new syringe to suck out the brake fluid reservoir and block all open brake fluid line and duct to avoid any leak and contamination. Pull the brake fluid reservoir sideways up and out of the two grommets. Relieve pressure in the brake booster by unbolting and separating the brake pedal from the push rod. Remove the brake master cylinder brake fluid, pull out the brake lines from the brake master cylinder and plug the ends to avoid contaminations, thereafter, unbolt the brake master cylinder from its mounting studs. When reinstalling be careful to check that nuts, fluid couplings, thread bores and mating services are clean. Install the brake master cylinder to the brake booster with a new sealing O-ring in place and tighten self-locking nuts; additionally, link the brake master cylinder pushrod and booster pushrod. Do not apply too much pressure when tightening the mounting nuts to guard against damaging the brake booster and in the process, causing a poor vacuum creation. Secure the brake master cylinder then fit the brake fluid lines, refit the fluid reservoir with new sealing grommits and secure the brake booster. The rest of the removal is done in the reverse order to the installation and it is recommended that new brake fluid is to be added as well as the entire brake system to be flushed.
