If the engine is in the car, remove the cylinder head and withdraw the distributor, then remove the fuel pump and partially withdraw the operating rod. When the engine is out of the car, the camshaft can be removed with the cylinder head still fitted to the block, ensuring that no piston is at TDC by turning the crankshaft 90° from the no. 1 TDC position to prevent valve heads from fouling the pistons. Begin by removing the oil distribution tube, then release the rocker arm eccentric adjusters and open the valve clearances to the widest gap. Before withdrawing the camshaft, all pressure on the cam lobes made by the rocker arms must be released. A special tool is available from BMW dealers, but an alternative method involves making two or three fork-ended tools from flat steel. Turn the camshaft using a lever until only three rocker arms exert pressure on their valve stems. With assistance, engage the fork-ended tools on the three rocker arms and depress them simultaneously to allow careful withdrawal of the camshaft from its bearings and extraction of the thrust plate, ensuring not to over-depress the rocker arms. Finally, unscrew and remove the two bolts retaining the camshaft guide plate, slide the plate downwards, and withdraw it.
