    Q:
Is it necessary to renew the timing chain,Timing Cover and Timing Chain Tensioner due to wear on BMW 2500? Posted by Customer
    A:
The timing chain does not tend to need replacing because of wear before the car has done some 50,000 km (30,000 miles) because the tensioner assembly keeps the chain taut until wear has hit the maximum. If timing chain noise is persistent at a higher rate before reaching this distance, the tensioner has to be checked and bled and this should be followed by inspecting the chain to check out for wear or damage. To get at the chain and the lower sprocket one has to dismantle both upper and lower timing case covers. If only the camshaft sprocket has to be replaced then only the chain tensioner and upper timing case cover have to be removed for accessing the sprocket fixing bolts but before that the camshaft and crankshaft have to be aligned so that the valves in the cylinder head and the pistons do not get damaged. For the upper cover, remove the distributor cap and the LT lead and vacuum pipe, position the engine so that No 1 cylinder is at the firing point, then detach the thermostat and rocker cover). The upper timing case cover with the distributor and the drive gear fixed with the fixing bolts then loosened in reverse order specified above, then removed. Also before refitting the cylinders check the cylinder head gasket to see if it is damaged and apply a sealant if necessary. Check the position of the engine and the distributor before tightening the cover bolts in the right sequence. The steps in the removal of the lower cover include the following; the removal of the upper timing case cover, the removal of the chain tensioner piston, and finally the removal of the alternator drive belt. If fitted, lift off the lower cover panel beneath the engine and undo the fixing nut and then use puller to detach the crankshaft pulley & damper assembly and record the position of the key. When loosening the nut on the models with a manual gearbox, engage bottom gear and apply the handbrake; with the models with an automatic gearbox, use a tool to lock the flywheel. Unbolt the cover of the lower timing case and free it off from the sump gasket. If the gasket is worn out it will be necessary to remove the sump and replace it with the new one. During refitting, the sealers should be applied on the joint faces and also the correct position of the tensioner piston needs to be arranged. To service the chain tensioner assembly, the upper timing case cover should be taken off to gain access to the oil pocket, both chain tensioner and plug are to be unscrewed, and both the spring and the piston are to be removed from the tensioner. Ensure the dimensionarity of the piston and the spring also check is due for replacement. Make certain the vent slots are available and to bleed the tensioner assembly fill up the oil pocket and drag the tensioner rail in order to get oil leakage. For the removal of the timing chain, you will have to remove the upper and lower timing case covers, unlock the lockplates and also remove the camshaft sprocket securing bolts without the turning of the crankshaft/camshaft. Take off the camshaft sprocket and chain: this part should be inspected for signs of wear or damage. To dismantle the crankshaft sprocket, one has to first do away with the oil pump sprocket and with the aid of puller, pull out the sprocket off the crankshaft. Upon reinstalling the timing chain the process should be done in the reverse manner, while making certain that the oil pump drive chain is tightened and that the camshaft sprocket is aligned in the correct manner.
