The crankshaft can only be removed if the engine is first removed with the vehicle, supposing that attributes such as the flywheel, crankshaft pulley, timing chain, oil pan, oil pump, together with the piston assemblies have been already detached. Prior to crankshaft removal, obtain the crankshaft end float with the help of a dial indicator situated against the crankshaft. Hold the crankshaft to the rear and set the indicator dial to zero, then hold the crankshaft to the front and take the reading which should be in the neighborhood of 0.003 to 0.010 inch. If you do not have a dial indicator it is recommended to use feeler gauges for clearance measurement. It is recommended that the main bearing cap bolts should be slackened and then removed to a free measure by turning them counterclockwise and removing it with a slight hammering on the cap. It is advisable to do this with a little help; turn the crankshaft over and replace the main bearing caps with their arrows pointing forward. For installation; the engine block and crankshaft should be cleaned and checked before being fitted. Originally any bearing insert should be removed and the bearing surfaces cleaned. New upper main bearing inserts are to be placed in the block, making sure the oil holes are in line, and the same for the lower ones recently installed on the caps. Examine the oil clearance at the inside of the cap using Plastigage, without rotating the cap in order not to interfere with it. Once the bolts are tighten, you have to take the caps off to read the width of the Plastigage against the scale for clearance. If the clearance is incorrect there must be some doubt about the cleanliness, and if necessary the bearings may have to be of a different size. Remove any remaining Plastigage as well as applying a thin film of oil with to the bearing areas. Replace the crankshaft and also the bearing caps and make sure that they are properly arranged before tightening the bolts. Check the crankshaft endplay one more time and spin it to feel free moving, correct any binding on it before fitting a fresh rear main oil seal.
