To remove the cooling fan, straighten the lockplates and remove the four fixing bolts. Then detach the lockplates and pull the fan from the coupling. When refitting, ensure that piston 1 is in the correct position in the heat-sensing element. Use new lockplates if the originals are not in good condition and use fixing bolts of the correct type (M6 x 25mm). Tighten the bolts alternately and evenly, then lock by bending up the lockplates. To remove the fan coupling, first remove the cooling fan as described previously. Take off the drive plate and then remove the clutch drum. If the coupling is faulty, it must be renewed complete as slave element A is adjusted exactly to fit drive plate B. Note that gap C must be 5mm. A faulty or inoperative coupling can cause engine overheating by failing to engage the cooling fan at the specified coolant temperature. If a replacement coupling assembly is not available, the fan should be temporarily locked to the coupling to prevent engine overheating. To do this, remove two of the fan securing bolts and replace them with two M6 x 30mm bolts positioned opposite each other to maintain cooling fan balance. The fan will then be locked to the coupling and will operate at all times. However, this may not allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature, leading to increased engine wear and high fuel consumption. Therefore, a new coupling should be installed with four bolts of the correct length as soon as possible.
