To remove and install shock absorbers on E30 and E36 models, start by removing the trunk trim panel to access the upper shock mounts. Then, raise the rear of the vehicle and support it safely. Support the lower control arm and remove the lower mounting bolt. Next, remove the upper mounting nut and take out the shock from the vehicle. To install, exchange or replace the upper shock mount and tighten the upper shock nut. Replace the gasket between the shock mount and the body, and install the shock. Tighten the nuts and install the trunk panel. Finally, install the lower shock mounting bolt and lower the vehicle. Ensure the vehicle is resting at standard ride height and tighten the mounting bolt accordingly. It is important to test the shock absorbers to ensure proper function. Push down on one corner of the unladen vehicle and observe the motion of the body as it is released. Any excessive pitch or failure to return to rest within 2-3 cycles indicates poor function. It is recommended to replace shock absorbers as a pair to maintain equal response on both sides of the vehicle.
