    Q:
How to disconnect and reconnect a fuel pump? Posted by Customer
    A:
Disconnect the lead from the battery negative terminal. Then, disconnect the two pin connector plug from the pump. Proceed to disconnect the fuel hoses, ensuring to plug the one which runs from the main fuel tank. Next, disconnect the pump mounting nuts and withdraw the pump complete with auxiliary tank. After this, disconnect the fuel pump from the auxiliary tank. It's important to note that any fault with the pump will necessitate renewal of the pump complete as it is a sealed unit. Refitting is a reversal of removal but make sure that the plug is connected the correct way round to the negative and positive terminals on the pump.

    Q:
How to overhaul a fuel pump? Posted by Customer
    A:
Disconnect the outlet hose from the fuel pump. Disconnect the distributor LT lead or the central HT lead from the coil to prevent the engine firing and then turn the ignition key to actuate the starter. Observing the outlet nozzle of the pump, well defined spurts of fuel should be ejected, If this is not the case and the cover and inlet hose of the pump are secure, the pump must be overhauled. To remove the pump, disconnect both hoses from the pump and remove the securing bolts. Remove the thick insulator and two thin gaskets and withdraw the operating rod. Scratch a line across the edges of the upper and lower pump flanges so that they can be reassembled in their original relative positions. Remove the cover centre bolt, the cover, gasket and filter (1600models) or drain plug (2000 series). Remove the flange screws and separate the two halves of the pump. To renew the diaphragm/rod assembly, remove the small cover plate (two screws) extract the operating arm pivot pin circlip and remove the pivot pin. Withdraw the arm and the diaphragm/spring assembly. Renew any worn components. On 2000/2002 type pumps the valves in the pump upper body are renewable but in the pump fitted to engines of smaller capacity, they are not and a fault in their operation must be overcome by renewal of the pump complete. Reassembly is a reversal of dismantling. Tighten the pump flange screws only when the operating arm is held in the depressed (inward)position. Make sure that the upper and lower body scratch marks are in alignment and that the diaphragm is not twisted. Renew the pump cover gasket and washer located under the centre bolt. Refitting is a reversal of removal but renew the thin gaskets which are located one each side of the flange insulator. On no account increase the overall thickness of these parts or the correct operation of the actuating rod and arm will be upset.
