    Q:
How do you test the ignition coil on BMW M3? Posted by Customer
    A:
To test the ignition coil of an E36 model (except for the M44 engine), take off the valve cover trim or coil pack cover first, shut off the ignition switch, unplug the harness connector and measure the primary resistance between two outer terminals (terminals 1 and 15) of a coil socket aiming at approximately 0.4-0.8 ohms; you must replace it if exceeds this range. For this reason, there is an assembly with a combined ignition coil which employs four different coiled M44 engines; therefore, turn off all spark plugs on them and uncouple this set of wires by rotating electrical connector to the left side to receive proper evaluation at primary resistance via each terminal specified for separate coils (coil 1: Pin 1-Pin 2, coil 2: Pin 6-Pin 2, coil3: Pin7-Pin2, coil4: Pin5-Pin2) in order to obtain about 0.4-0.8 ohms; upon falling out from these limits, you will have to change a whole rack of coils in one go. There are several steps involved when removing and installing an Ignition Control Module (ICM). The Ignition Control Module (ICM) on these models is inherent in each particular ignition coil such that they cannot be replaced individually from the coils necessitating where ICM failures occur only complete replacement of those items as typified here.

    Q:
How do you test the ignition coil on the 1997 BMW Z3, excluding the M44 engine? Posted by Customer
    A:
First, remove the valve cover trim cover or coil pack cover. Then, with the ignition off, disconnect the harness connector and check the primary resistance between the two outer terminals (terminals 1 and 15) of the coil connector socket. Aim for a resistance of approximately 0.4-0.8 ohms. If it exceeds this range, replace the coil.
