Don't allow the steering shaft to turn while the steering wheel is removed. Begin by disconnecting the cable(s) from the battery negative terminal(s) and removing the airbag unit from the center of the steering wheel. Set the front wheels in the straight-ahead position and engage the steering lock by removing the ignition key. Loosen and remove the steering wheel retaining bolt, then disconnect the electrical connector(s). Mark the steering wheel and steering column shaft in relation to each other, then lift the steering wheel off the shaft splines; if it is tight, tap it near the center with the palm of your hand or twist it side-to-side while pulling upwards. The airbag contact unit will automatically lock in position as the wheel is removed, so do not attempt to rotate it. Avoid striking the steering wheel or shaft with a hammer or using excessive force to remove it. Inspect the horn contact ring and turn signal canceling cam for wear or damage, replacing as necessary. For installation, reverse the removal steps, ensuring that if the contact unit has been rotated, it is re-centered by pressing down and rotating its center fully counterclockwise, then back through three complete clockwise rotations. Before installation, ensure the turn signal switch arm is in the center (OFF) position to prevent breaking the switch tab. Coat the steering wheel horn contact ring with a small amount of petroleum jelly, reinstall the wheel while ensuring the contact unit wiring is correctly routed, engage the wheel with the column shaft splines aligning the marks made during removal, and tighten the steering wheel retaining bolt to the specified torque before reinstalling the airbag unit.
