The M54 engine oil pump is driven by the crankshaft and requires lowering the front suspension for removal. First, remove the oil sump, then the oil pump sprocket nut, remembering it has left-hand threads. Lift off the sprocket and drive chain, unbolt the pump from the engine block, and remove the pick-up tube bolts. Note the location of any spacers between the pump and block. Check the oil pump shaft gears for smooth rotation and inspect the oil pressure relief valve. If gears don't turn smoothly, replace the pump. During installation, check pump locating dowels for damage and correct positioning. Replace the oil pick-up and return tube sealing O-rings, align the sprocket splines with the oil pump shaft splines, and tighten the sprocket nut. Fill the engine with oil, run it, and check for leaks.

Begin by disconnecting the negative battery cable. Then, remove the oil pan to expose the oil pump. Next, remove the oil pump mounting bolts and lower the oil pump and driveshaft. To install, inspect and replace the oil pump driveshaft bearing if necessary, and then install the gear and cover.
