    Q:
How is the BMW X3 oil pump removed and installed? Posted by Customer
    A:
The M54 engine oil pump is driven by the crankshaft and requires lowering the front suspension for removal. First, remove the oil sump, then the oil pump sprocket nut, remembering it has left-hand threads. Lift off the sprocket and drive chain, unbolt the pump from the engine block, and remove the pick-up tube bolts. Note the location of any spacers between the pump and block. Check the oil pump shaft gears for smooth rotation and inspect the oil pressure relief valve. If gears don't turn smoothly, replace the pump. During installation, check pump locating dowels for damage and correct positioning. Replace the oil pick-up and return tube sealing O-rings, align the sprocket splines with the oil pump shaft splines, and tighten the sprocket nut. Fill the engine with oil, run it, and check for leaks.

    Q:
What steps should be followed to work on the oil pump and Timing Chain on BMW Z4? Posted by Customer
    A:
Before we get to work on the oil pump, there are few parts which we require that is a pick-up pipe O-ring, a relieve valve spring cap O-ring and the snap ring of the relieve valve. For the models created before January 2000, the oil pump and the baffle plate are installed as a single module For all the models created after January 2000, they are installed as two different modules. Start by disconnecting the oil pan next, and then unscrew the nut that holds the sprocket in place with reference to the oil pump shaft; this is a left-hand thread, and you have to rotate it anti-clockwise to loosen it. Remove the sprocket and the chain from the oil pump shaft. If the pump is TIG welded to the oil pan baffle plate, then unbolt the plate to get rid of the assembly, which comprises the pump, as well as the pick-up tube. For separate models, you need to take out the pick-up pipe by unscrewing the bolts which cements it to the baffle plate and the pump. Next, the four bolts on the oil pump must be unscrewed in order to have it pulled off. Remove the cover by unbolting it from the front of the pump; also, pull out the driveshaft/rotor and outer rotor from the pumpkin. Check the body, the rotors and the cover for signs of scoring, wear or crack and repair or replace them or the total pump depending on the severity. Replace the rotors and check the dimensions of clearance between the outer rotor and the pump body and end play of rotors and the oil pump cover mating face with the standard indicated. To remove the pressure relief valve components, it is necessary to push the valve into its housing slightly, and then unscrew the snap-ring with special pliers and then to take out the spring cap, spring and the piston. It is required to fit a new O-ring seal on the relief valve spring cap and reassemble the parts without harming the surface of spring cap. Blade in the rotors and cover to the pump, make sure the locating dowels are properly seated then tighten the cover bolts to the required torque. On the effect of oil pump sprocket retaining nut, bear in mind that the specified torque should be tightened. When pulling off the oil pump drive chain the main step is to remove the primary timing chain and the other step is to take out the oil pump drive chain from the crankshaft sprocket. Last but not the least; replace the chain with crankshaft sprocket and then the primary timing chain.
