    A:
Disconnect the negative battery cable. To access the knock sensors, remove the intake manifold. There are two knock sensors on the left side of the block. The front knock sensor is located on the block near the ECT sensor. The rear knock sensor is mounted behind the starter motor. Mark the mounting angle of the sensors. Disconnect the electrical connector to the sensors. Remove the mounting bolt at each sensor. These bolts are aluminum and must be discarded. Installation is the reverse of removal, noting the following points: Clean the block surface before installing the sensors. Use new aluminum bolts. Mount the sensors at the same angle as original. Tighten bolts to 63 in-lbs, then an additional 90-degrees.

How to replace knock sensors on BMW X3? Posted by Customer
    A:
The knock sensors for M54 engine are under intake manifold located on the left side of cylinder head. Before starting off replacement process, remember to disconnect the negative (-) battery cable and cover battery terminal to avoid accidental contact. Once the engine is completely cool down, remove intake manifold. On the left side of the block, unplug electrical harness connector for knock sensor. The knock sensor fixing bolts are at lateral part of cylinder block; pull out these through sensors' sides. When taking off a knock sensor from a block, it should be noted that previously installed angle and then it should be installed into its previous position once again. Using appropriative torque wrench attach the bolt fixing a sensor in a proper hole having watchful attention so as not to overtighten it. Clean contact surface between engine block and onto senser before inserting new knock sensor. Finally, check and delete all trouble codes from ECM memory. Replacing Knock Sensors on N52 Engine This process is similar when replacing knock sensors on N52 engine too. Like in M54 engines, their locations are directly under intake manifolds situated on left sides of cylinder heads. Be sure to disconnect negative (-) battery terminal before you commence, in addition don't forget covering it with anything available such as plastic bag or any insulator material which can reduce chances of electrical accidents happening at your vicinity, Remove intake manifold also disconnecting its harness plug for knock senor wires/terminals attached to this unit's top face mounted below gas pipe 2 together with some brackets that hold them tightly; observe screws/nuts/caps securing all those devices.' sides Remove screws holding such devices including underneath secured using clip-ons or tighten taps after marking how much they protrude outside bodywork because that will help fix same way later otherwise there might be errors during adjustment if misplaced without keeping always right angles where necessary! Use torque wrench while tightening screw holding device inside plate making sure no over-tighten. After that it should be cleaned by using a pump sprayer covered with cotton soaked in kerosene and then apply soapy water solution over area being treated; any remaining dirt can now be scrubbed off till its surface becomes clean enough before installing new knock sensor. Finally, check and clear any fault codes from the ECM memory.
