    Q:
How do you remove and install the electrically-heated thermostat in M54 six cylinder engine on BMW X3? Posted by Customer
    A:
The electrically-heated thermostat is an installed on the thermostat housing and its operation is controlled by the ECM. If a faulty thermostat is suspected check the ECM for fault codes using a BMW scan tool. The housing assembly also had to be removed to carry out this, you will need to drain the radiator and engine block water. Next, bolt off the cooling fan and cowl and then clip of the electrical harness connector from the thermostat housing. Use a sheet to cover the alternator to avoid rusting by the coolant, remove the rivet type retaining clips and pull out the hose nipples from the housing. Pull the thermostat housing from the front of the engine with the nut on the top of the engine lifting eye unscrewed to better be removed. It is the process of the opposite of that on removal, the sealing faces must be clean of oil, a new sealing gasket is to be used. Last but not least you just add the coolant to the system and then release the pressure or more simply, bleed it.

    Q:
How to replace a faulty electrically-heated thermostat in six cylinder engine on BMW X5? Posted by Customer
    A:
Electrical heating is used and the thermostat is integrated within the thermostat housing assembly, while its operation is supervised by the DME control module. If a faulty thermostat is believed to be the initiator of the problem, the DME control module should be scanned for fault codes which may have been stored, by using the suitable scan tool. First go ahead and flush the radiator and engine block, then you need to remove the air intake duct, cooling fan, and the fan shroud. Remove the electrical harness connector from it, remove the retaining clips of the hose fittings and remove the hose fittings from the thermostat housing. You should unbolt and take off the thermostat housing from the front of the engine, also the nut on the top of the engine lifting eye will have to be loosened for easier removal to be made. For installation reverse the removal process while all faces in contact with sealing gasket must be oil free and that a new sealing gasket must be provided. Last but not the least, add the coolant in the system.

    Q:
How to remove and install a thermostat and coolant on BMW Z4? Posted by Customer
    A:
Non-toxic coolant is available at most auto parts stores. Although the coolant is non-toxic, proper disposal is still required. A new thermostat sealing ring and (where fitted) housing gasket/seal will be required on installation. To remove the thermostat, disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Drain the cooling system. Where applicable, to improve access to the thermostat housing, remove the cooling fan and viscous coupling. Pry out the locking wire clips and disconnect the coolant hose(s) from the thermostat housing on the front of the cylinder head/timing chain cover (as applicable). Disconnect the electrical connector from the thermostat housing. Unscrew the retaining bolts and remove the thermostat housing. Recover the housing gasket/seal. It will be necessary to unbolt the engine lifting bracket to allow the housing to be removed. Note that the thermostat is integral with the housing. Recover the sealing ring. Installation is the reverse of removal, bearing in mind the following points. Replace the thermostat housing O-ring seal. Tighten the thermostat housing bolts to the torque. Reinstall the cooling fan. On completion, refill the cooling system.

    Q:
How do you remove and install the thermostat on BMW Z3? Posted by Customer
    A:
To replace the thermostat on E30 models with S14, M20, or M42 engines, start by draining the coolant and loosening the hose clamps or bolts on the thermostat housing. Remove the thermostat and install the new one, ensuring the support bar faces out for M20 and M42 models. Replace the O-ring and gasket where necessary and torque the bolts. For E36 models, disconnect the battery, remove the radiator trim cover, cooling fan, and hoses. Loosen the housing bolts and replace the entire unit if the thermostat is installed into the housing. Check the housing for cracks, replace the seal, and install the new thermostat with the air bleed hole up. Coat the bolts with anti-seizing compound, tighten them, and reassemble the remaining parts. Finally, bleed the cooling system and enter the radio security code.
