To get rid of balance shafts and oil pump, one must first drain the oil; remove the oil pan and install a special tool in the timing hole to retain the crankshaft securely in position. For installation, ensure No. 1 piston remains at TDC, locking the counterbalance shaft in place with a special tool.

Working through the vacuum pump sealing cap opening, press the timing chain with the chain tensioner to relieve tension on the oil pump chain and insert a suitable lock pin into the tensioner.

The steps involved in the removal process are: 1. Remove the valve cover, crankshaft front oil seal, drivebelt(s), and auxiliary drivebelt tensioner. 2. Secure the engine at TDC for No 1 cylinder and remove the timing chain tensioner. 3. Release the crankshaft pulley hub and create a tool to hold it in place. 4. Loosen and remove the pulley hub bolt, then withdraw the hub from the crankshaft. 5. Unscrew the plugs from the timing chain cover and remove the timing chain guides. 6. Remove the VANOS adjusting units and lift up the timing chain module, including the chain and crankshaft sprocket. 7. If necessary, disengage the chain from the sprocket and remove it from the module.

Install the crankshaft locking tool through the bell housing into the flywheel to lock the crankshaft at TDC.

Check the camshaft gear flats and grip discs for wear, and if necessary, replace the oil pump drive gear.

The timing of the intake and exhaust camshafts is variable and managed by the engine control module (ECM) through a system known as double VANOS.

Secure the camshaft sprockets and impulse wheels by tightening mounting screws on the exhaust camshaft impulse wheel to approximately 5 Nm, tightening mounting nuts on exhaust and intake sprocket assemblies to approximately 5 Nm, and torque down mounting screws and nuts to final specifications.

Next, remove the coolant pump pulley, engine covers, and cylinder head cover, followed by the spark plugs, which should be plugged to prevent debris from entering the engine.
