    Q:
How to remove and replace the vacuum pump on BMW 328i? Posted by Customer
    A:
The 3.0L models utilize a vacuum pump on the left side of the cylinder block, driven by a chain from the crankshaft sprocket, due to the Valvetronic system. To replace it, remove the drivebelt, tensioner, vacuum pump cover, and intake manifold. Rotate the crankshaft pulley bolt until the vacuum pump sprocket holes align with mounting bolts. Secure the sprocket, loosen the retaining bolt and pump bolts. Push the chain tensioner right and lock it. Unscrew the bolts, replace the pump, and use a new gasket. Reverse the process to install. For 2.0L models, the vacuum pump is at the rear of the valve cover, driven by the exhaust camshaft. Remove engine covers, trailing link, and sound insulation cover. Disconnect the vacuum line and battery cable. Remove the turbocharger vacuum line screw and disconnect the line to the control unit. Unscrew and pull off the pump. Replace the O-ring if needed, lubricate, and re-install by rotating and pushing into the camshaft gear. Secure with screws and reverse the steps for the rest.

    Q:
How is a chain-driven vacuum pump fitted to the engine to provide proper engine vacuum to the brake vacuum booster in six cylinder engine on BMW X3? Posted by Customer
    A:
For establishing an adequate engine vacuum to the brake vacuum booster at all engine speeds, there is an induction driven vacuum pump fitted to the engine, located beneath the intake manifold on the front left side. BMW has indicated that the sprocket center bolt must be loosened while the sprocket is immobilized which is best done by use of BMW special tools. First take out the engine drive belt followed by the drive belt tensioner assembly. Loosen the sealing cover for the vacuum pump with the help of a screwdriver from the front side of the engine so as to reach the sprocket. Second, take away the intake manifold. For normal direction of engine rotation turn the center bolt of the vibration damper until the holes in the sprocket match the position of the pump bolts. Mount BMW special tool 114362 to the engine and engage the sprocket with the engine and secure it by using BMW special tool ref 110290. Loosen the sprocket mounting bolt and later on the pump mounting screws, and ensure that the pump does not drop. Last but not the least, pull out the vacuum pump toward the rear, and while installing it, just reverse the above-stated procedure and install the gasket.
