    Q:
What is the importance of regular inspection of hoses and CV boots on BMW M3? Posted by Customer
    A:
Regularly inspecting hoses is important in order to detect age-induced hardening which may result in cracks, hose clamp tightness should be right as over tightening can cause separation and ripping of older hoses. Change soft and spongy hoses with swollen sections because they can burst. Perform regular checks for deterioration, leakages, loose hose clamps on upper and lower radiator hoses, as well as heater hoses should take place every 30k miles and during seasonal maintenance. Check that the engine and cooling system are cold during inspections, examine the hoses visually through looking for cracking, rotting or collapsing. Rub your hands down along the hose feeling for weak or swollen spots where it has weakened and needs replacement. Worn out ones will feel brittle and could have a permanently narrowed point from suction; also it may show fraying or cracking while new ones will have a solid smooth rubber surface with no visible string reinforcements that will be firm springy when squeezed but not lose their shape either pressed by fingers or bent in half without kinking or getting a permanent dent at the bend point where they flexed so straighten them out again before reusing them if possible but otherwise throw away old stiffened up brittle deteriorated wasted rotten unsafe dangerous leaking rotted relieved squashed destroyed torn broken ruptured cracked holed burst damaged collapsing flat collapsed twisted inverted stuck together fused one next another folded back behind upwards inside underneath downwards outside front backwards going around turning left right here there somewhere everywhere now then never always at least twice more better worse longer shorter faster slower higher lower lighter darker heavier thinner thicker wider narrower larger smaller different unchanged same like unlike close distant far apart open sealed penetrated splash primordial virgin tasty sweet sour bitter salt dry wet hot cold burnt raw cooked fried boiled grilled smoked steamed baked spilled poured eaten powdered rubbed against applied made into smoothened swallowed chewed bit licked tasted carved peeled crushed ground pounded sliced mixed stirred squeezed patted slathered with spread over chopped mixed in together melted browned heated cooled washed dried drained peeled grated slowly quickly quietly loudly excitedly sadly angrily nervously happily fearfully bravely shyly confidently crazily madly abruptly gently vigorously helplessly hopefully innocently knowingly lazily peacefully suddenly unhappily understandingly unwillingly wearily joyfully solemnly still moving slowly evenly steadily forward backwards up down round about strange terrible lovely small big young old nice bad little great awful pleasant complete modified empty filled full distinct modified foreign same identical similar close identical akin repeated similar like unaltered familiar such as; when you remove the hoses, be sure to observe safety precautions; let the engine coolant cool and drain the system properly. Loosen hose clamps then carefully slide hose off fitting without causing any damage to component. Clean hose mounting connections, inspect clamps, and replace if necessary. For ease of installation dip hose ends in coolant, then slide clamps onto the hose and position the ends of the hose over connections. Attach clamps a minimum of 1/4 inch from each end of the tube, refill coolant mixture into cooling system until it is at an appropriate level inside reservoir or recovery tank. If available pressure test for leaks or run engine to operating temperature and check for leaks. Regular inspection should also be carried out on CV boots (Constant Velocity) that show damage especially when they are torn which should be replaced immediately. These boots can be found at inner and outer end of drive axles; they keep grease inside them while preventing dirt from entering the CV joints. A torn boot will destroy a CV joint causing expensive replacement later due to insufficient lubrication of its parts. Signs that a CV boot has failed include presence of greasy substance on wheels and brake parts. Inspect CV boots for missing clamps tears and deterioration replacing them as needed to protect CV joints from contamination.
