BMW 2500 Intake Valve Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What are the steps involved in dismantling and reassembling the Cylinder Head,Rocker Arm,Rocker Shaft Spring and valve on BMW 2500?
A: Dismantling therefore means removing only the carburetter if it is fouling the inlet or exhaust manifolds, however, it is recommended that carburetters should be disconnected from the inlet manifolds. Sustain the head on make-shift wooden stand during work to minimize contact of light alloys, organizing and checking on all the valve gear parts for ease of reassembly where some of them are replaced. For models with a mechanical fuel pump, make a removal of the pump and pushrod and the oil feed pipe and, when reinstalling, pay attention to the positions of the seals. The oil feed pipe has to be placed correctly to spray oil correctly and has a specific dimension which it has to reach. This head is fragile: remove the distributor and set the valve clearances to maximum. Before the camshaft and the rocker shaft are withdrawn, the valve springs should be compressed tightly with the use of a compression frame, while handling the cylinder head with a lot of care since there are protruding valves. Loosen the camshaft guide plate fixing screws and take out the camshaft assembly. In rocker shafts, aulier thrust rings and rocker arms must be pressed back, circlips removed and locking bolts loosened and tightened with Loctite. Employ an appropriate device on the removal of the rocker shafts make sure to pick parts that will be reassembled. Take off the rear cover for the purpose of accessing the rear rocker shaft; remember the position of the seals and use a new gasket if required. Use spring compressor to remove valve assembly; do not forget checking and replacing any worn out valve stem seal. Valves should be cleaned of carbon, checked for serviceability, replaceable valves with bent stems or burned heads; these are suggestive parameters for control; maximum control of serviceable valves is achievable by grinding to their seats. Valves guides that are worn subjected to replacement, whereas seat inserts that are of the pierced or burn category should be refaced or replaced by a service station. Check efficiency of the valve springs, replace those that have worn out or distorted. Inspect rocker gear for any signs of wear and look at the cam followers and replace worn rocker set. Many camshafts and all of them associated components have to be checked for wear or damage of the surfaces transferring the parts to a new camshaft, if required. Clean the cylinder head and inspect for flatness and damage, with the provision for resurfacing or replacement as the case may be. When decarbonising do not use sharp implements and always remove carbon from combustion chambers and ports, block oil ways from dirt. Grind valves using carborundum paste, always in future to make sure it has a very smooth surface before washing compounds. The process of reassembly is the complete opposite of the removal procedure and entails the use of the compression frame to secure the rocker shafts and camshaft appropriately before a confirmation of the end play of the camshaft is effected.
