To remove both front wheels on BMW 318i, 318iC, 318iS, 318ti, 323i, 323iC, 323iS, 325i, 325iC, 325iS, 328i, 328iC, 328iS, M3, and Z3 cars, jacks up the front end and take out the front wheels. Unbolt the steering wheel and steering rack coupling bolt, grip the coupling, and turn the bolt under the steering rack until it comes off. Drain the power steering fluid from the reservoir. Take out and cap off the fluid return line, then remove the hollow bolt for the pressure line. Separate the
Tie Rod from either end of the
Steering Knuckle, loosen the fore-aft bolts holding the steering rack in place, and mark where the original mounting holes were located. Before beginning, disconnect and lift any engine mounts above the steering rack, move the engine up 2 inches, and pull out the steering rack. After placing the steering gear into the car using either the crossmember's rear holes or the original holes, lower your engine and attach the steering gear bolts at 30 foot pounds. Also tighten the engine mount nuts. Reconnect the tie rods to their places on the steering knuckles. Before securing the nuts, make sure to avoid using locknuts where cotter pin holes are present. Put new crush washers on the return and pressure lines where they connect to the steering rack, then connect them. Tighten the hollow bolt holding them on to required torque values. Make the steering gear marks match up between the shaft and housing, put in bolts, and fasten them. Last, put the steering wheel in its middle position and finish power steering tank filling and leakage tests. Also check if your vehicle's wheels are perfectly straight.
