BMW M3 Rack and Pinions

The Rack and Pinions in BMW M3 vehicles are used in the steering system where it is used to move the front wheels side-wards from the rotational movement of the steering wheel. This is done by the use of rack and pinion type of control system, in which the pinion turns round the rack, thus enabling the correct control of the steering mechanism. In the M3 models produced over the years, the BMW has mostly used hydraulic power assisted rack and pinions steering which futher increases response and reduces the effort required. Though early models of M3 were fitted with entirely mechanical rack and pinion mechanisms, subsequent models employ hydraulic boost for enhanced competence. The rack design is also capable of variation, for example, by having straight as opposed to helical gears in a gear train alters characteristics like torque, temperature, and wear and tear which are generally optimized for straight gears with minimum backlash. On the whole, Rack and Pinions is crucial for achieving the fine feel and feedback which distinguishes the BMW M3 and offering good steering response.

BMW M3 Rack and Pinions Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the steering gear on BMW M3?
A: To remove and install the rack and pinions on E30 models (except 325 IX models), start by raising and supporting the front end of the vehicle and removing the front wheels. Remove the steering wheel and the steering rack coupling bolt. Loosen the upper bolt to disconnect the coupling from the steering rack. Drain and discard the power steering fluid from the reservoir and disconnect and plug the fluid return line from the rack. Remove the pressure line hollow bolt from the rack and plug. Disconnect the Tie Rods from the Steering Knuckles and remove the steering rack mounting bolts. Note the holes the steering rack was mounted to. If applicable, disconnect the engine mounts above the steering rack. Raise the engine and remove the steering rack. To install, use the rear holes in the crossmember or the original holes if not the rear ones. Lower the engine and tighten the rack and pinions bolts and engine mount nuts. Connect the tie rods to the steering knuckles and tighten the nuts. Connect the return line and pressure line to the rack and pinions using new crush washers. Align the marks on the rack and pinions shaft and housing and the slot of the universal joint with the marks. Install the bolts and tighten. Install the steering wheel in the centered position. Fill and bleed the power steering reservoir and have the alignment checked. For 325 IX models, additional steps are required, including using special tools to support the engine and front axle carrier, removing the entire front axle carrier, and reinstalling in reverse order.
