BMW X5 Parking Brake Shoe Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you remove and replace the Parking Brake Shoe on BMW X5?
A: Raise the rear of the car and remove the road wheels. Without disconnecting the brake fluid hose, remove the rear Brake Calipers from the trailing arms and take out the rear brake rotors. Ensure the brake caliper assembly does not hang from the brake hose; support it from the chassis with strong wire. Unhook the return springs from the brake shoes and remove the brake shoe retaining pins using a BMW special tool or an equivalent. Rotate the retainer a quarter turn to release it, then spread the shoes apart and lift them out, noting the position of the brake shoe adjuster, as the right side is illustrated and the left is a mirror image. Apply a thin coat of grease to the sliding parts and pins before reassembly, and ensure the installation is the reverse of removal while adjusting the Parking Brake Cables.
