BMW Z4 Ignition Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Ignition Switch on BMW Z4?
A: Replacing the lock assembly entails having to take apart the Steering Column, which is something that requires certain specific tools and, as far as it is advisable at least, should be done either by a BMW dealer or an appropriately equipped and skilled technician. To remove the lock cylinder, access the car's power supply point and switch off the battery and then with the help of key, insert it into the lock to unlock the steering and then proceed to the next step of unlocking the lock cylinder. Turn the retaining screw a little counterclockwise and take it together with the plastic rivet as the sides of the upper shroud are pressed. Remove the lower shroud by pushing in the center pins of the two plastic expanding rivets. Remove the terminal and gently take off the transponder ring around the ignition switch with two screws of a screwdriver. If equipped with interlock cable, press this retaining clip for releasing the interlock cable from the ignition switch. Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the accessory position, thereafter, insert a drill bit or any appropriate pin into the hole at the center of the cylinder and press on the lock cylinder detent, and finally push the cylinder out. Installation involves aligning the lock cylinder and when it is placed in the housing it has a clicking sound. The ignition switch block can be removed by pulling out the battery negative terminal, followed by the removal of the retaining screw, pushing on the sides of the upper shroud to release it and lifting it off. Leverage on the centre pins and pull out the plastic rivets in order to detach the lower shroud. Pull out the switch electrical connector and then, using two hex screws, detract the switch block from the lock assembly. Removal is the reverse of installation, before installing the switch screws, one has to ensure that they are varnished to remain fixed in that position then re-connect the battery to test the switch before fixing the steering column shrouds.
